Stop Dabbling & Make A Difference!

How many priorities do you have each work day? Many of us take on too much professionally.

Many of the professionals I've coached, trained, and worked with over the years have expressed a fear they won't succeed unless they hedge their bets, therefore taking on multiple paths to success. But experience has proven that the more we spread ourselves thin, the more risk of mediocre and failure.

With focus, we can accelerate our progress and leverage the momentum and support of all the resources around us. So how do you choose what to focus on and how do you stay focused?

The best question I've heard for deciding your focus came from Gary Keller's book, The One Thing, and is;

What’s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?

Ok, now that you have a focus, how do you stay focused consistently so you accelerate towards success? Try The Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that uses a timer to break down work into intervals of focus and rest. These intervals are called “Pomodoros” (or “tomatoes” in Italian), after the tomato shaped-kitchen timers that work perfectly for timing sessions.

Pomodoros are separated by short breaks for distractions, daydreaming, snacking—whatever. It works something like this:

  • Choose a task to work on exclusively for 25 minutes.

  • Set a timer.

  • Work on the task until the timer rings.

  • Take a five-minute break.

  • Repeat this cycle four times and then take a 15-minute break.

To time my intervals and track my progress, I use the PomodoroPro app on my iPhone ($2.99 from the App Store). The Pomodoro Technique website also has free resources to help you streamline your work process and combat your multi-tasker tendencies.

As you start to focus and concentrate your efforts, you'll watch your results snowball and you'll start making a greater impact in your professional life.
